Inside the basement, police found an elderly woman tied to a chair, severely dehydrated and too weak to stand.
She had been trapped there for nearly four days after a man broke into her home looking for money. When she refused to tell him where her savings were, he locked her in the basement and disappeared.
Her neighbors never noticed anything unusual because the house sat far from the road. But her dog never stopped trying to get help. Investigators later discovered the German Shepherd had somehow broken partially free from inside the house, dragged his chain through a broken basement window, and spent days barking at strangers passing by in the rain.
Most people ignored him. Some even complained about the noise. The pizza boy was the first person who actually stopped to see why the dog was screaming.
Doctors later said the woman likely would not have survived another night trapped downstairs. When reporters asked her what she remembered most, she started crying and said, “That dog refused to give up on me even when the rest of the world drove past.
